Studies of very large numbers of people have helped researchers discover some of the common experiences and occurrences in the lives of people who have experienced psychosis.
Researchers have discovered that some life experiences – like complications at birth and growing up in a large city – are more associated with schizophrenia. Some – including adversity or trauma during childhood and stressful events – seem to contribute to the development of both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Scientists do not yet know how all the different potentially contributing factors are linked together, or how they interact to cause someone to become unwell.
